Facebook Unveils Docs.com

At its F8 conference Wednesday, Facebook launched the beta version of Docs.com, created by Microsoft’s FUSE Labs.

The online app allows users to create, edit  and share Microsoft Office documents with Facebook friends.

Billed as an online collaboration tool, PC World found it to be similar to Microsoft’s Office 2010 Web edition with the primary difference being the connection to Facebook.

Users will sign in to Docs for Facebook using your Facebook ID, either at Docs.com or the Facebook app and then they can create or upload new Word, Excel or Powerpoint documents. Or you can view documents created by your Facebook friends.  The viewing and editing interfaces match those in Microsoft Office.

The biggest difference between Docs and other Web-based collaboration tools: documents can be moved to users’ desktop-based Office software.  The feature is com compatible with both PC and Mac versions of Office, as long as it is Office 2007 newer.
