BT and Alcatel-Lucent sign agreement

BT has signed a five year agreement with Alcatel-Lucent for an evolution of BT’s 21st Century Network. This agreement will help BT in its IP transformation apart from improving customer experience and accelerating time-to-market for next generation services, states Alcatel-Lucent.

As BT prepares to introduce new video-rich services to an expanded base of wholesale and retail subscribers, the company can expedite network convergence, increase capacity and deliver content cost effectively with the help of Alcatel-Lucent’s High Leverage Network architecture and transformational services. This contract will specifically help BT to build up its infrastructure to continue to play a leading role in strengthening the UK’s leadership in communications, states Alcatel-Lucent.

A High Leverage Network enables the creation and delivery of differentiated services that leverage embedded intelligence in the network, such as subscriber, service and application awareness and provide enhanced end-user QoE and traffic optimization.

“BT’s 21CN is one of the most complete, exciting and ambitious business transformation programs anywhere in the global telecommunications industry,” said Lakh Jemmett, Vice President, Alcatel-Lucent North Europe. “We are proud that our High Leverage Network architecture is enabling BT to transform their business, transform their networks, and deliver powerful new services in a scalable, cost-effective way.”

Alcatel-Lucent will provide an innovative end-to-end transport solution which tightly integrates IP and optical transport resources in support of its HLN vision, and in alignment with BT’s business drivers. The company will also provide professional services such as project management, design, installation and commissioning, repair and return and software updates.

Recently, Alcatel-Lucent and T-Systems, Deutsche Telekom’s corporate customer arm, announced they have deployed the industry first commercial 100 Gbit/s or “100 G” link connectivity that leverages both IP routing and optical technologies. Leveraging Alcatel-Lucent’s High Leverage Network or “HLN” architecture, the companies achieved this landmark performance by connecting the high-performance data centers of the Dresden and Bergakademie Freiberg technical universities with a 60 km link using commercial 100 G connectivity.
