Potential ban averted after reaching ‘regulatory compliant’ solution with RIM

The agreement reached between the United Arab Emirates’ telecoms regulator and Canada’s BlackBerry handset maker Research In Motion Ltd. is “final,” a U.A.E. government official said Monday.

“The BlackBerry solution is final,” Mohamed Al Ghanim, director general of the U.A.E.’s Telecommunications Regulatory Authority, or TRA, said at an industry event in Dubai.

The TRA said earlier in October that a potential ban on key BlackBerry services including email and instant messenger from Oct. 11 had been averted after it reached a “regulatory compliant” solution with RIM.

RIM has come under pressure by authorities in the U.A.E., Saudi Arabia, India and other countries to provide greater access to the encrypted information sent by BlackBerry devices.
